KUALA LUMPUR, 2nd SEPTEMBER 2025 – Northern Solar Holdings Berhad ("Northern Solar" or "the Company"), a leading renewable energy solutions provider, today entered into an Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning (EPCC) contract with FDIGS Makmur Sdn Bhd (“FDIGS Makmur”), a fast-growing aquaculture company, for the development of a 5MW ground-mounted Self-Consumption Solar PV (SELCO) system integrated with a 10MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Pahang.
The project is expected to generate 6.68 million kWh of clean electricity annually, enabling FDIGS Makmur to achieve estimated savings of RM3.93 million per year while reducing reliance on conventional grid power.
The signing ceremony was represented by Mr. Lew Shoong Kai, Managing Director of Northern Solar Holdings Berhad and Mr. Steven Tan, Director & CEO of FDIGS Makmur Sdn Bhd.
FDIGS Makmur Sdn Bhd, incorporated in 2023 and based in Pahang, is a subsidiary of FDI Global Sdn Bhd. The company specialises in sustainable aquaculture, particularly tiger prawn (harimau) farming, and exports. Through strategic partnerships with the Pahang State Government, FDIGS Makmur operates with a strong focus on innovation, technology, and green practices.
In January 2025, the Malaysian government expanded the SELCO framework beyond rooftops to include ground-mounted and floating solar installations within user premises. Capacity caps were also removed, allowing businesses and farms to generate up to 100% of their energy needs, supported by mandatory BESS integration for systems above 72kWp.
Ground-mounted SELCO opens the door for industries such as aquaculture, agriculture, and manufacturing to utilise unused land for solar generation, achieving energy independence and cost savings while meeting ESG targets.
The 10MWh BESS integrated into this project acts as a “giant power bank,” storing excess solar electricity during the day and releasing it at night or during cloudy conditions. This ensures a stable 24/7 energy supply, reducing intermittency and enhancing grid stability.
In Malaysia, where solar adoption is accelerating under the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), BESS solutions are critical to balancing supply and demand, reducing intermittency, and preventing grid instability.
“This ground-mounted SELCO project with FDIGS Makmur is a milestone for Northern Solar as it demonstrates our ability to deliver integrated solar + storage solutions under the updated SELCO framework. For energy-intensive industries like aquaculture, the combination of solar and BESS is key to achieving significant cost savings, operational stability, and long-term sustainability,” said Mr. Lew Shoong Kai, Managing Director of Northern Solar on the partnership.
“This RM20.5 million contract adds to our growing order book and highlights Northern Solar’s readiness to capture new opportunities in ground-mounted SELCO and storage solutions. We see this as an exciting growth frontier complementing our core C&I solar projects, while also building capacity for larger-scale initiatives in Malaysia’s renewable energy roadmap,” he added.
